Dorothy (Carfrae Don’tRainOnMyParade) at 4 months
Am CH Berridale’s The Last Straw x AmCH CdnCH & OTCH Carfrae Life Is A Highway RN RA, Am CD RN
Born March 1, 2010, Optigen Normal, FN Normal, BAER Normal, OFA Hips Excellent, Patellas & Thyroid Normal

Dorothy is Crosby’s litter sister. Dorothy was only shown once in conformation in 2010, due to our relocation activities. She tested very well in the Volhard puppy aptitude testing, but instead of obedience, we started her in tracking. Dorothy has an incredible nose, has picked up tracking very quickly and hopefully will obtain a Scent Detection or Tracking title in the future.

Although she is a very small girl, she would likely do well in hunt test events. She has demonstrated her “birdiness” by catching goldfinches, robins, orioles, and small hawks around the dog yards. She also retrieves toads, salamanders and snakes and brings them inside the house. I usually discover said reptiles at 11 PM at night.

Dorothy goes back to Am CH Timeless Traveller ECM and Am CH Springhill Slapjack MX MXJ WD ECM, on both sides of her pedigree. We were advised by a “breeder friend” to get rid of Dorothy, instead we took her to a conformation show. She came home with her very first points towards her Canadian championship!

Dorothy seems to have developed a new role for herself, that of supervisor of Paula and Whitney. Dorothy is our escape artist “extraordinaire” and one has to keep one or two steps ahead of her, at all times.

For our self preservation, we have learned to think like “Dorothy”.  She has taught Whitney how to squeeze under the chainlink fences and the two of them have gone on more than one escapade through our fields. Not a good thing with a busy county road 400 feet to the north and coyotes to the south.

We got to the stage where I was afraid to let her out in the big dog yard unsupervised.  In 2018, after much discussion, we installed a low voltage electric fence along the inside 550+ feet of our big dog yard, similar to what a lot of local gardeners use to keep the rabbits out of their vegetable gardens.

Dorothy did some tracking training a few years ago and I might pursue the new (to the CKC) performance event of scent detection.
